As the embers of their son's pyre die out, Suryashekhar's wife confronts him and questions, for the first time, his unbending faith and the truthfulness of the predictions of the horoscope. While confronting Arijit, Alok has a massive heart attack and dies. As Arijit's parents come to Benaras and come to know of their relationship, they refuse to accept their son's decision. But by another turn of events, Arijit decides to marry Kasturi once he comes to know that he has sired the child she has conceived. Kasturi takes it up as a challenge to prove that she is capable of carrying a child and as a result gets involved with Arijit. Her husband, Shyam cannot father a child, but blames her and abuses her which she refuses to accept. There Arijit meets Kasturi, a Bihari woman, whose mother-in-law awaits death. He decides to check in at Moksha Bhavan, a house where people come to die. But, by then, Suryashekhar has decided that he will die in Benaras to rid himself of the eternal cycle of rebirth. Their grandson, Arijit comes to stay with them through a strange turn of events, and they are overjoyed. She bears everything with quiet, resigned dignity. Suryashekhar's wife an accomplished and educated lady, is reduced to being a mute witness to all this and never protests against her husband's whims and harsh decisions. Alok marries outside his caste, denounces his horoscope, and leaves home to settle abroad with his wife. His obduracy distances him from his only son, Alok, who refuses to put up with his father's unbending attitude to the horoscope. He treats the predictions of the horoscope like axiomatic truth, realizing little that such predictions can often be misleading. The patriarch, Suryashekhar Chattopadhyay is a deeply religious person and a man of firm principles. But revolting against it she comes to discover the illegitimacy of her own birth and finds Urmila Sanyal as her escapist mother, who was scared of the social accusations. In a moment she is being out castled and constantly pressurized to surrender to the patriarchal will. It is then when she becomes pregnant, she realizes the real faces of the people whom she has been respecting and admiring so much. She gets romantically involved with Rajat who is the lavish brat of a big businessman along with her family support but then nobody is ready to bear its outcomes. During these on going course of actions she comes in contact with Urmila Sanyal (Rati Agnihotri), the leading social activist who has dedicated her life to the service of the exploited and distressed women of the society. Her photographic skills explore through the various special expressions of the people when they are dead and seeks to find out the emotions of the pale and white faces.
